In retrospect, it might not have been my smartest move when I wouldn’t let him in the front door. In my defense, I was feeling a bit paranoid about how to protect Meg adequately, so I kept him at the cabin threshold.

Since the news about Trudy was good, I was surprised when Tristan folded his arms across his chest. He scowled at me from across my front step. “What the fuck have you done?”

“What are you talking about?” Dread welled in my belly. I hoped he wasn’t talking about what I thought he was talking about.

“You’ve fucked her. Have you lost your mind?”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“It is undeniable because you’re guarding the door like you’ve got a treasure in there.”

“Meg risked her life, saving Trudy. If it’d been up to me, she wouldn’t have left the cabin last night. So what the fuck is your problem, cousin?” I used the word to remind him he was still family, and he needed not to overstep his bounds. I was not putting up with slights about Meg from anyone.

“What if she’s the one responsible for the traps,” he said. His cheeks were ruddy from the cold and his agitation.

“That’s ridiculous.” I scoffed, waving my hand like I was shooing a fly. “She heals people. She doesn’t harm them. Why would she set the traps? Your great theory makes no sense.”

“The traps showed up when she did.” Tristan lowered his head like he did when he was settling in for a fight. He was so bullheaded. Probably an advantage in the courtroom but not welcome when he was against Meg.

“She has no motive. Now leave before I lose my patience.” I jabbed a finger into his chest: my cousin was deranged. His theory made no sense.

“Admit it. The timing is suspicious. She’s using you, and you don’t see it.”

“She saved Trudy’s leg. Is this all some misplaced guilt because you didn’t find the trap first? This isn’t like what happened when we were kids. And it wasn’t your fault.” One of Tristan’s sisters fell out of a tree when they were playing as kids. It never got correctly repaired, and she suffered a limp still.

“Bullshit. This isn’t about me. You fucked her, and now you can’t see it. She’s using you.”

“Get out.” I turned to head back into the house, dismissing his idiot theory.

And that was when Tristan lunged for me. His hand was on my shoulder, spinning me around. His fist made contact with my abdomen and knocked the wind of out me. The funny thing was, I saw it coming. But I didn’t want to believe my cousin would hit me first. As a rule, I didn’t throw the first punch, but I was happy to end a fight once it started. I wasn’t in hockey all those years purely for the skating.

I surged toward him despite my lack of breath, intent on shutting his stupid mouth. But Tristan was stockier than me, and his lower center of gravity made him difficult to throw down in the deep snow.
